All Year 11 pupils are encouraged to secure at least one work experience placement after their GCSE examinations. These placements range in length from a couple of days to a fortnight, although the majority last one week. We rely on the contributions of ONLs, parents and other professionals with links to the school to provide this extremely worthwhile opportunity for our students. If you think that you may be able to help us by offering a work experience placement to a Year 11 pupil, please contact Mrs O’Sullivan in the Careers Department (via email: do’sullivan@nlcs.org.uk).
Year 9 Take Your Daughter to Work Day: 10th March 2010
All Year 9 students have a day away from school in order to go to work with ‘a parent’. Each cohort of Year 9 students is given this opportunity in turn. The aim is for the girls to have a day in the workplace as a way of starting to consider the whole world of work. This is in support of the Careers and Education Guidance which they have received as part of their PSHE programme this year. To encourage further career exploration, all pupils will plan a much more structured work experience placement when in Year 11. For the purposes of Take Your Daughter to Work Day, the term ‘parent’ is taken very loosely, with many girls accompanying relatives or wider family friends. All girls are asked to take notes on their observations and to interview someone at the workplace they attend to gain as rich an experience of the field as possible. After the day, by way of a follow-up activity, girls are asked to submit a written report about their experience, and several girls are selected to present their experiences in an assembly.
Year 10 Careers Day: June 2010
Year 10 students are off timetable for a day of activities designed to enrich them beyond the curriculum. Students take part in a range of activities exploring the idea of identifying employability skills. During the course of the sessions, students will work with volunteering members of various professions on a series of tasks, culminating in identifying and articulating their own skills. This will then be linked to the idea of CV writing, which the students will be exploring as part of the Year 11 PSHE course. There will also be an opportunity for students to question our volunteers on their professions and career paths.
