Careers Convention 2011

NLCS held its biannual Careers Convention on the evening of Thursday 10th November. The convention invited representatives from a broad range of professions to share their knowledge and expertise with the school's students. The event, open to girls from Years 9 to 13 and their parents, included four keynote speakers.

Talks by Mr Chris Kenny (Civil Service), Mrs Camilla Newman (Publishing), Mrs Angelie Moledina (Finance) and Mrs Alison Kirkham (Broadcasting) thrilled the audience. The talks were designed to encourage the girls to think beyond the traditional career pathways - 'With the current economic climate and increasing competition in securing graduate jobs, it is important for the girls to be able to make an informed decision about their future career goals,' said Mrs Breffit, careers adviser.

The event also provided the opportunity for girls to network with ONLs and professionals and learn more about the work experience and internship opportunities available to them. For girls further down the school, the convention aimed to focus their initial thoughts on future career paths.

A total of 88 advisers attended the event covering a spectrum of career disciplines including Medical careers and Careers with Science, Journalism and Broadcasting, Marketing and PR, Fashion and Architecture, Engineering and Finance and Law and the Civil Service. In addition, advisers from three Gap year organisations were present, offering guidance and information to girls keen to take a year out after the Sixth Form.

Many advisers offered the advice that as long as girls chose a subject to read at university which they thoroughly enjoyed, with hard work and ambition, they would gain an excellent degree, and thus a strong platform for job applications.

On behalf of all the girls, I would like to thank all the advisers for giving up their time to attend the Careers Convention. A huge thank you must go to Mrs Breffit, for organising this exceptionally informative and useful event. Many thanks also go to Miss Ryan and to all the volunteers who assisted on the night.
