Physical Education

The Physical Education Department aims to promote participation in sport and encourage girls to enjoy being active. We help each girl to find a sport or activity that they can continue to play long into their adult lives.

Acres of beautiful playing fields within the grounds of the school, an all purpose sports centre and astro turf pitches allow pupils to enjoy sport as well as to excel.

Opportunities for competition and enrichment are offered within the curriculum and beyond, in both team and individual activities. We strive to always achieve a balance between the pursuit of excellence and the provision of ‘sport for all’.

The Physical Education department consists of specialist members of staff as well as qualified lifeguards/swimming teachers. All staff teach a range of activities across all age groups from Reception right through to Year 13.

The 30 acres of grounds at Canons offer excellent opportunities for sport. We have 4 lacrosse pitches, an Astroturf and 5 hard netball courts. In the summer these convert to a 200m athletics track, 6 rounders pitches and 11 tennis courts. There is also a sports centre with a sports hall, dance studio, fitness suite and 25m swimming pool.

In Year 7 & 8 the girls follow a core curriculum of dance, gymnastics, lacrosse, netball, badminton, athletics, tennis, rounders and swimming, in 5 or 6 periods each week.

In Year 9 girls continue to develop their skills in the above sports but the curriculum is broadened. It includes a Health Related Fitness programme, volleyball, football, basketball, water polo and synchronised swimming.

In Years 10 and 11 the girls rotate between fitness suite, trampolining, volleyball, table tennis, basketball, badminton, football, hockey, touch rugby, netball, swimming and dance. In Year 10 they can opt to follow the Bronze Medallion Swimming course and in Year 11 they can do the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification. These girls can then apply to work at the Sports Centre in the evenings or weekends.

In the Sixth Form girls have one timetabled lesson a week where they can choose an activity from all those listed above. This lesson is always just before the lunch break so that girls can continue to be active and work independently in the fitness suite or the pool.

We provide an extensive range of extracurricular activities in lunch break, after school and at weekends. Many of our clubs are non – selective and have a recreational feel about them. The focus of these clubs is to get as many girls involved as possible. It is in these clubs that we foster the love of sport and promote a fitness for life ethos.

We also run many squads where the girls trial for places and then train hard to be selected to compete in matches and tournaments against other schools. Fixtures take place after school and at weekends. We compete both on a local level and nationally. Our netball teams frequently win the Harrow Championships and qualify for the Middlesex Finals. The Lacrosse teams compete in County and National tournaments with many girls being selected for the County teams, some even go on to play for England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. The Badminton team has been very successful in the past few years competing in the National Schools Finals.

Teams are also taken on tours all over the world. The Lacrosse teams tend to travel to U.S.A. and the Netball teams have recently been competing in the Malta Rally.
