Learning in the First School

In the First School, the girls are taught by their form teacher who is supported by a full-time teaching assistant. Learning through play and practical activities is the basis of the first years at North London Collegiate and Reception classes are an extension of the nursery or playgroup environments with which the girls are already familiar.

From entry in the Reception classes through to Year 2, the children develop basic skills in reading, writing and number work alongside Art and Design, ICT, Music, Drama, PE, PSHE and Science, History and Geography are taught through Topic Work. Girls in Year 2 also learn how to play chess.

Class sizes

In the First School there are two classes in each age of the three years. In each class the 20 girls are taught by a class teacher supported by a full time teaching assistant. There is an additional teaching assistant shared between the two Reception classes. The class groupings tend to remain the same throughout the First School. When girls move up to Y3 there are two classes in each year with about 24 girls in each class. Each class is made up of girls who have come up from our First School and new girls who join at 7+.

Outdoor learning

The First School playground and the school grounds are accessible from both Reception  classrooms. This enables learning to take place both inside and outside the classroom. Groups of girls are often outside extending their learning in a variety of ways for example counting, sorting or drawing. The Woodland area provides an ideal place for all First School girls to make dens, make music and climb trees, and Canons Cottage is the scene of much imaginative play.

The First School Day

First School pupils (Reception to Year 2) arrive at school between 8.30am and 8.50am when school starts. At break times, the girls enjoy clambering on their own adventure playground or devising their own games in Canon's Cottage Lunch is served in the main dining room, where a wide range of hot and cold food is available to meet all dietary requirements. Teaching assistants help during lunch and supervise outdoor playtime. Afternoon lessons finish at 3.10pm.
A late room is set up Monday, Wednesday and Thursday for girls who are waiting for older siblings. They may read quietly or start their homework. Parents should collect girls from the late room by 3.55pm.

First School Library

Girls in Year 1 and Year 2 take books out of the First School library which is ‘manned’ before school and in Golden Time by a rota of parents. The girls also have a regular Library lesson with the Junior School Librarian. They learn how to use the library, look at nonfiction books and start some simple research.
