Community Service

Girls take part in visits to a variety of schools and care homes in the local community. Visits take place after school to two local Livability care homes for adults with physical and learning disabilities.  During lunchtimes or free periods, groups of Sixth-Formers travel to Northway School for children with special needs, in order to provide support in lessons.

Girls in Years 10 to 13 may opt to undertake Community Service as part of the Afternoon Activities programme. Some visit Knights Court Nursing Home in Edgware, while others travel to Kisharon School for children with special needs. Often there is a tea party in the PAC for residents from Meadowside Care Home, giving them a chance to spend some time out of the care home and chat to our students.

There are three charity committees in school, the Year 8 Charity Committee, Year 11 Charity Committee (Time Out) and Canonaid. Canonaid is the main school charity committee and helps to coordinate all Community Service activity within the school. Within Canonaid there is a representative for each year group. The representatives for Year 8 and Year 11 work closely with the committees for those year groups. The Year 8 committee tends to organise fundraising activities, while the main focus for Time Out is to encourage members of the Upper School to give up their time to take part in Community Service.

There are a great many Community Service activities that run during the course of the year. These include the big parties for the residents of local care homes, held at the school every year at Christmas and at the end of the Summer Term. At Christmas, the residents are treated to a performance of the Year 7 panto, organised by the Drama Department.  Canonaid also organises various musical and theatrical entertainments.

The annual Mencap Fun Day takes place early in the Summer Term. Children with special needs from the local area are invited to the school to use the facilities (such as the pool and bouncy castle), play games and have a picnic.

Every Spring Term the Founder’s Day Charity events take place. Each year group chooses a charity and raises money in various ways. Most hold cake sales and other in-school events, but some organise sponsored events outside school and raise a great deal of money.
